Surrey County HallNew rules that prevent councillors from funding street lighting, grit bins and highway schemes from their own local allocation budgets have been heavily criticised by Liberal Democrat county councillors in Surrey.

selfie smLib Dem David Lee has won the Caterham Valley seat on Surrey County Council previously held by the Tories.

The Lib Dem candidate polled 1,589 votes (47.5%) with a majority of 246.

The Caterham Valley seat covers the Tandridge District council wards of Harestone, Valley and Whyteleafe - which David also represents. Councillors Alun Jones and Dorinda Cooper hold both the Valley seats for the Lib Dems.

In the Caterham Hill, Lib Dem Chris Botten held on to the seat following a recount, winning by just 12 votes. The seat was previously held by John Orrick for the Lib Dems.

david council tax sm cropLiberal Democrat councillors have welcomed the decision by Conservative-run Surrey County Council to cease the publication of its unpopular "Surrey Matters" magazine.
The magazine, which has cost council tax payers over £1.2m since 2011, was axed following a meeting of the County Council's Cabinet at the end of March. The last edition was published in January 2017 and the cancellation will save the County Council approximately £250K a year.
