Last night, Tory MP’s including East Surrey M.P. Claire Coutinho, voted against a motion to continue funding free school meals over the school holidays until Easter 2021. This bill was introduced following the campaign by footballer Marcus Rashford.
Earlier this year vouchers were provided over Easter, the May half term and the summer holidays. This meant that children most in need could be assured food whilst away from school.
Cllr Chris Botten, Caterham on the Hill Liberal Democrat Councillor says “The Tories have descimated Children's Centres in Tandridge with the closure of several in the last year. Now they are depriving those children who are most in need of food.”
Chris goes on to say “I don’t know how any Tory could have voted against something that is so clearly the right thing to do. They spent millions on eat out to help out, but have voted to not feed hungry school children. They really are the nasty party.”
The vote was defeated by 322 votes to 261. All Liberal Democrat M.P.’s supported the motion.
